The Anti-Racism Program in St. Louis, MO: A Step Towards Equity

The Francis Howell school district in St. Louis, MO, took a stand against racism and injustice three years ago when they introduced a resolution to improve community circles on schools, housing, and race. This resolution promised to implement an anti-racism program that would be coordinated by the National Conference and supported by institutions and individuals who are dedicated to eliminating racism. The anti-racism program consists of two six-day residential programs: the Institute for the Elimination of Racism and the Anytown Youth Leadership Program.

These programs are designed to train leaders to address racism in their respective institutions. In addition, more than 20 organizations in St. Louis have made it their mission to dismantle racism in their community efforts. The anti-racism program is also being replicated nationally, with the first new process taking place in Orlando, Florida.

It was initially initiated in the religious community to create and strengthen intentional and long-term anti-racist processes within religious organizations, but has since expanded to include major political, media, business, educational, nonprofit, and civic organizations. St. Louis staff members will meet with customers to develop and deliver customized programs for an organization. The anti-racism program is an important step towards creating a more equitable society and will continue to be supported until 2001 when the program ends.
